Wildflowers, airplanes and everyday beauty
I was sitting at a rustic wooden polished picnic table inside an airplane hangar under the Bosnian sky. It’s blue roof made it easy for us to land in the small red and white Cessna for a two day work trip for Matt. Most of the time we were exploring the surrounds of Zadar, Croatia. It was only 13 days until book launch and I was trying to determine how to share grace words and Croatian holiday/work words. I was taking a moment on Matt’t laptop.
It had been a little overcast so I hadn’t paid much attention to the world outside. For days I’d been breathing in all the European uniqueness. Pizza smells, church bells, Croatian alleyways filled with quaint cafes, gelato, and white rocky beaches had captivated my attention. Yet, I had work to do.
The clouds moved and sun streamed into the large paneled windows of the hangar that housed not just planes but a extravagant collection of motorbikes and even a couple of vintage cars. I looked to my left and there, in the uncut grass was a field of yellow and white wildflowers. Let’s be honest, they were probably weeds, but with my proof copy of Daring Grace, I was not taking this little sign of heaven’s grace for granted.
I literally sat in the long grass, surrounded by yellow and white flower heads, staring at delicate little petals and taking pictures even of the dandelions.
Jesus said it to us. If our Father takes care of the wildflowers, won’t He also take care of us? I had laid back in the flowers with my social media angst and hoped that somehow I could capture a little bit of the beauty that I experienced in this moment.
Daring Grace is an invitation to find God in everything, all around us. When Matt said he’d had a wild dream about tanks and jeeps and smashing down fences, I asked him simply - Where is Jesus in the dream?
When the kids wake up disturbed in their sleep, where are the fields of green pastures and still waters for their little minds?
When our daily lives press in with unexpected pressures, pains and anxiety where is the Shepherd of your soul?
He hasn’t moved. It’s just that we so often forget to lean (See Chapter 5 of Daring Grace).
The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me,
I shall not want.
He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.
He refreshes and restores my soul (life)…
